WELCOME TO OPEK

PLASTIC THAT MOTHER EARTH APPROVES

Organic Planet Earth Kustodian (OPEK) is committed to producing, manufacturing and distributing products through Eco-friendly methods only, with no chemical pollution.

As a business, we offer multiple solutions to solve society’s addiction to single use, environmentally harmful plastics. Our products are comprised of home-compostable materials, including sugarcane, corn starch, and plant based PLA. Although the quality, durability and ease of use of our products is indistinguishable from regular plastics, they completely decompose into organic matter, leaving no harmful by-products behind. All of our products are commercially compostable, with many also being home compostable.

Our cornstarch products are 100% plant-based, home-compostable and biodegradable while also being tear and heat resistant. Our cornstarch formula has been approved by both AS-4736 and AS-5810 meaning they can be utilised as one of the composting ingredients in your gardens.

OPEK’s range of bagasse plates and bowls are completely plant-based and 100% compostable and biodegradable while also being made of refuse material, making them carbon neutral.

Our bamboo and paper products come in a variety of sizes and designs, while also being completely plant-based, which ensures they are completely compostable, biodegradable and carbon-neutral.

Our sugarcane products are made of entirely plant-based ingredients and has been certified by AS4736, meaning they are compostable and biodegradable.

Why Choose OPEK?

100% Compostable Products

As our products are made from organic, plant-based materials, they go through the decomposition process and break down such as carbon dioxide, water, and organic matter. Decomposition is an essential and natural part of all ecosystems, as it creates the necessary loop for the food chain to operate. Furthermore, the replacement of plastics with compostable material helps to alleviate the strain placed on landfills, and reduce our harmful pollution rates.
Our products are an environmentally friendly alternative to regular plastic. Regular single use plastics persist for hundreds of years within both landfill and in nature, which has caused the plastic pollution crisis we see today. Plastic pollution can be found on land, within waterways, in the ocean, and even within your food (in the form of microplastics). While maintaining the strength, durability, and feel of traditional plastics, OPEK’s 100% compostable and plant based product range completely solve the aforementioned issues.

Plastic Without the Downsides

Bioplastic Lifecycle
Currently there are several solutions to either minimise or recycle plastic waste, mostly used across Europe. As per usual, Australia is lagging behind compared to other developed countries. However, we are seeing more and more of these solutions being adopted across Australia. One such solution is FOGO.

FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) allows households and industry alike to combine their garden waste (green bin), and food waste of any kind, into one bin. This waste is taken to a FOGO recycling facility, whereby the organic matter is all broken down and composted. Not only does this significantly reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill, it provides useful compost material, which may be used in agriculture, parks, sports fields, and more.

With an astonishing 40% of landfill estimated to be food waste, the benefits to such a scheme are apparent. Within landfill sites, food waste is not able to decompose as it should, due to drastically lower oxygen levels, and a lack of sunlight below the top layer. Decomposition of organic matter within an anaerobic environment leads to the release of large amounts of CO2 and CH4. With landfills currently nearing capacity, and no other solution in sight, the widespread implementation of FOGO is not only desirable, but necessary.

FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) Landfill
Using FOGO has the following benefits:

  • Reduces rising landfill costs
  • Reduces methane that is generated and emitted from the landfill
  • Helps preserve the air quality of our environment
  • Captures food waste full of nutrients that are too valuable to waste
  • Produces quality compost
  • Improves the soil health of our environment
  • Generations of sustainable energy through Biogas produced from composting FOGO

Our FOGO services available include:

  • Providing a completely compostable, 100% plant-based alternatives to common plastic items
  • Education of residents and businesses on the FOGO process, and how to correctly participate
  • Delivery of the necessary FOGO collection bins, including council bins and home compost bins
  • Arrangement and coordination of FOGO waste collection, and delivery to appropriate processing facilities
  • Construction and installation of additional FOGO processing centres, coordinated with recycling companies
Our product range makes use of organic materials such as sugarcane, bagasse, corn starch, bamboo and kraft, all of which are accepted and composted within FOGO facilities. Make the choice that Mother Earth approves, and switch to OPEK today!

How The Government Is Helping

The NSW Government has made the following commitments:
  • Providing grants of up to $1.3 million to introduce FOGO services
  • Providing grants of up to $3 million for new FOGO processing facilities
  • Providing grants to increase markets for compost
  • Enabling food relief agencies to handle more donated food with funding for vans, fridges and freezers
  • Helping households and business reduce food waste by encouraging good practices
  • Providing grants for councils to trial food-only collections in unit blocks
  • Providing grants for food waste collections from businesses
  • Supporting new markets for compost to improve agricultural land by boosting soil health, moisture retention and resilience to disease.

Our Beginnings

OPEK started with a vision to reduce green-house emissions by 2030 and promote sustainable growth. We saw the need for sustainable growth and innovation within the compostable materials industry and set out with a goal to leave this world better than we found it. We work in tandem with Government and Industry figures alike by creating awareness of the plastic pollution crisis, while also offering environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions in the form of compostable alternatives. Studies show that Australians are the second highest producers of waste per capita, and we are determined to be the solution!

Who We Are Today

Australians use 3.92 billion plastic bags a year, that’s over 10 million new bags being used every day. Also, an estimated 3.76 billion bags or 20,700 tonnes of plastic are disposed of in landfill sites throughout Australia every year. That’s over 7000 bags per hour! We have found ourselves living within an incredibly wasteful culture, where simply replacing a product is preferable to fixing it, and recycling is a thing of the past. With OPEK’s ranges of compostable alternatives, the consequences of our wasteful lifestyle is drastically alleviated. From bin liners to nappy waste bags, cutlery to single use plates / bowls, OPEK is the answer for a sustainable future and a cleaner environment!

Our Belief for the Future

We believe our products are the solution for future generations and growth! Our mission is to be at the forefront of change by providing sustainable bioplastic resins like compostable bags, nappy bags, waste bags and 100% compostable bin liners that are derived from renewable sources. We will help reduce landfill waste and our carbon footprint while creating value and making a difference. We also strive to create a more sustainable future for generations to come. Our roadmap for reduced carbon emissions and sustainable growth has started with no plans of stopping!

FOGO

At OPEK, we believe that one of the solutions to minimise or reduce plastic waste is by FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics). One of the many advantages of FOGO is that it enables households’ and industry’s garden waste as well as food waste of any kind […] to be put into one bin. These wastes will be taken to a nearby FOGO facility where it will be broken down and composted. Not only does it relieve the amount of waste which go to a landfill, but also potentially provide useful compost material which can be used in other sectors.
