England’s government has said it plans to ban the use of plastic plates and plastic cutlery in a bid to cut down on waste. The move, which will be subject to a consultation, is part of a government campaign to reduce plastic waste. In 2040, almost half of the plastic straws used in England will be banned. The figures, which are based on government data, also revealed that every person in the country uses around 37 single-use items of cutlery.
The Environment Bill is currently going through Parliament. It aims to tackle the issue of plastic pollution by introducing a deposit return scheme for certain items. To cut down on plastic use, the government has announced plans to ban the supply of plastic straws, cotton buds, and plastic stirrers. The plans are expected to help stop the harmful effects of plastic pollution on the environment.
Jo Morley, from City to Sea, said that although she was pleased with the news, it was just the tip of the iceberg. She added that the government needed to act further to address the issue of plastic pollution in the oceans.
