Many companies around the world have been trying their best to do their part in order to alleviate the plastic problem that exists in this century. Dell does this by using recycled plastic parts found in the ocean to use as their laptop trays in order to reduce the waste in landfills. Samsung has recently made a pledge to eliminate all plastic from its smartphone packaging by 2025.
This pledge has been made as a part of Samsung’s new sustainability platform named Galaxy for the Planet which has the specific purpose of reducing the waste that has been created during the lifecycle of Samsung smartphone products. Samsung has set a variety of sustainability goals so they can reach this by 2025. Their plan is to incorporate recycled materials in all new smartphone products to achieve zero waste to landfill which ultimately results in a reduction of the standby power consumption of the smartphone charges.
Another sustainability measure that Samsung has introduced in launching their new upcycling program for old galaxy devices which helps people manage their energy use and pledge to use renewable energy sources for Brazil and Mexico operations by 2025. Samsung’s annual sustainability report had indicated that the greenhouse gas emissions had risen by 5% each year which had amounted to a 14.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalence. This increase in emissions had resulted in Samsung falling short of their emissions target for 2020.
In addition to Samsung’s latest pledge, LG had also made a sustainability commitment on the same day. LG had stated that they were going to set emission targets which allows them to stretch the goal of the Paris Agreement of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. LG wants the company to operate with 100% renewable energy by 2050. They had pledged two years ago to be carbon neutral by 2030 which means they would have to reduce the carbon emissions in the production stage to half of what it emitted in 2017 by 2030 which has been outlined in the latest sustainability report by LG.
